August 28th News The Mirror reported that a 59-year-old man was arrested for allegedly sending malicious messages to English female football player Jesse Carter during this summer's Women's European Championship.

Lancashire Police arrested the suspect in Great Harwood Thursday morning, and he has been released and under further investigation. Chester County Police Chief Mark Roberts said the remarks against Carter were shocking and praised her for her bravery in standing up to fight the abuse. He stressed that no one should suffer such a bad abuse and hopes that today’s arrest is only the first step in many operations in the coming months. He also made it clear that racist remarks will not be tolerated, that everyone should be responsible for their words and deeds and cannot hide behind social media accounts and make vicious comments.

England player, head coach Sarina Weigman and FA CEO Mark Bringham all expressed support for Carter. Bringham is asking social media companies to do more to combat online hatred. He compared the news with previous information received by England men's football players Saka, Sancho and Rashford after the 2020 European Cup final and said that although the passage of the Online Hazard Act has been pushed, it still needs to be strengthened. He called on the UK Communications Authority to ensure that social media platform operators are truly responsible.
