In the Serie C League that started last weekend, a rule that just started to be implemented this season was abolished after only one day of use, which is the "shortest-lived" football rule in history.
This season, the Serie C League introduced a new referee assistance system called "Football Video Support" to help referees enforce the law. Through this system, the team's head coach can ask the referee to conduct a VAR check when he has objections to the penalty to confirm whether his penalty is accurate.
The head coaches on both sides have two challenges in the game, which sounds a bit like basketball rules. If the referee changes the original decision after watching the replay, the head coach can still retain this challenge opportunity.
In the first round of Group B of the Serie C League on August 23, the head coach of the Carpi team successfully made a profit for the team.
At that time, Calpi had just taken the lead, but suddenly, their player Lorenzo Lombardi got the second yellow card for winning the handball, which caused two yellows to turn red and was sent off. Calpi would face the dilemma of 10 people to fight.
Normally, VAR only checks for major judgments, such as straight red, goals or penalty kicks.
But Carpi head coach Stefano Casani was quick-responsive and immediately used the challenge rights to demand a re-examination of the penalty.
Facts have proved that Lombardi touched the ball with his chest instead of his arm. After viewing the video replay, the referee Francisco Zago changed the penalty and revoked the second yellow card.
This allowed Lombardi to stay on the court, but Kalpi failed to maintain the lead, and Juventus' new generation scored a goal in injury time to equalize the score.
However, Casani will be the only head coach who can use this rule to make a profit for the team. After the
game, the Serie C League announced the abolition of this rule and the coach will no longer have the right to challenge the referee's penalty.
This season, Italian leagues at all levels have made a series of reforms to the VAR rules. In Serie A, VAR rules have also changed. Now the referee will announce the VAR penalty and the reasons for the penalty in public in the stadium, just like in the Premier League.
