Xinhua News Agency, Sydney, June 2 (Reporters Liang Youchang and Qi Zijian) The Australian Football Association announced on the 2nd that it would appoint 55-year-old Joe Montemuro as the head coach of the Australian women's football national team. The position of Australian women's football coach has been vacant since former head coach Tony Gustafson left in August last year.

Australia Football Association said in a statement that Australian Montemuro has been appointed as the 15th full-time head coach of the women's football national team. He will officially start his work on June 16, first responsible for the team's international match windows in June and July, and will continue to prepare for the Women's Asian Cup in Australia in 2026.

AFC Interim CEO Heather Garyok said Montemuro will bring the team "a world-class experience and a deep understanding of Australian football". Over the past decade, Montemuro has coached at the highest level of women's football in Europe, with an "unparalleled understanding of the elements needed to compete and succeed in the top modern football matches.

Montemouro said that being appointed as the head coach of the Australian women's football team is a "lifelong honor". "This team is of great significance to many Australians, and I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to participate in writing its new chapter."

In the 2024-2025 season that ended not long ago, Montemuro coached the French Ligue 1 giant Lyon Women's Football Team, led the team to win the French Women's Football League One Championship, and reached the semi-finals of the European Women's Champions League. Previously, Montemuro also coached teams such as Juventus women's football team, Arsenal women's football team and Melbourne City women's football team.

In early August last year, the Australian Women's Football Team failed to qualify in the group at the Paris Olympics, and the Australian Football Association announced that it would no longer renew its contract with Swedish Gustafson. Then in September, the Australian Football Association announced the appointment of veteran coach Tom Selmani as interim head coach. (End)
