Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku replaces Nicholas Jackson on the court
Liverpool has reportedly "joined the competition" to sign Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku, who will leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
Nkunku, who moved from RB Leipzig to West London for €60 million (£51 million), was highly anticipated before the 2023/24 season and was hailed as one of Europe's most exciting offensive players.
The French international, who had performed well in the Bundesliga, was seen as a major success in Chelsea's reconstruction period.
However, his career at Stamford Bridge has been affected by ongoing injury issues, limiting his overall impact over two seasons.
Nkunku showed his strength when he was healthy, quietly scoring 14 goals in all games in the 2024/25 season, becoming Chelsea’s second scorer this season.
It is worth noting that only three of them were won in the Premier League.
According to French media Foot Mercato, Liverpool has now become a strong contender for Nkunku.
The Reds have allegedly "started discussions" and hope to strengthen the offense under the leadership of incoming head coach Arne Slott, but there is still uncertainty about the future of Darwin Nunes and others.
It is reported that Nkunku has been included in the "fastlist" formulated before the summer transfer window.
He is capable of being forwards, 10, and even wings, which might attract Slott, and Cody Gakpo is in a similar position.
Chelsea reportedly willing to let the player go, and Nkunku is eager to find a new start elsewhere, so a summer breakup seems inevitable.
Newcastle United are also interested in Nkunku because they understand that Nkunku can join, but their pursuit may depend on whether they can provide European football.
Participating in the Champions League is said to be "very important" for the 27-year-old as he is considering his next move.
Bayern Munich was interested in Nkunku during the January transfer window and they are still under consideration now that they may regain interest in Nkunku if Leroy Sane leaves the club this summer.
Arsenal is also linked to Nkunku, with former Chelsea winger Florent Maluda believing the move will benefit the player.
Maluda said: "Arsenal or Bayern Munich are his suitable places, but I'm not sure if he should leave Chelsea."

"Personally, I like him, both as a player and as a person. I hope he can do his best to prove what he showed in the beginning."
Nkunku is not the only name Liverpool is concerned about. The Reds are also about to sign Leverkusen right-back Jeremy Frimpon.
Liverpool "ready to trigger" the Dutch player's £29.5 million termination clause as the club "is about to sign their first summer player".
The former Celtic defender is seen as a long-time replacement for Trent Alexander Arnold, who is about to join Real Madrid.
