Erling Haaland still making history in Champions League, Cristiano Ronaldo falls short

8:33am, 7 November 2025Football

Erling Haaland once again wrote a golden chapter in his career in the Champions League. The Norwegian forward scored a crucial goal in Manchester City's victory over Borussia Dortmund at the Etihad Stadium in the early hours of Sunday, November 6, creating history that has never been achieved in Europe's top leagues.

Gore Haaland scored in the 29th minute, receiving a precise pass from the left side from Jeremy Dooku. The striker, in his clinical style, fired the ball into the corner of the goal, giving Dortmund's goalkeeper no chance to react.

That goal extended Manchester City's lead to 2-0, after Phil Foden opened the scoring. Interestingly, this game also has special meaning for Haaland personally.

The history of Erling Haaland

Replacing the trust of Ruben Dias as captain, the 25-year-old has created a unique record: becoming the first player in history to score in five consecutive Champions League games for three different clubs, RB Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund and now Manchester City.

Even a superstar like Cristiano Ronaldo has never achieved such an achievement, despite the legend having played for three European giants: Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.

This season, Haaland has performed well in all competitions, scoring a total of 18 goals. He has become a mainstay in City's front line, especially since no other player has yet scored more than one goal in the Premier League for a Guardiola-coached side.

What is unique is that Manchester City's second scorer this season is not one of their own players, but Burnley defender Max Esteve, who scored two own goals when Manchester City beat his team 5-1 in September.

Haaland

With the goal against Dortmund, Haaland is now tied with Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe as the player with the most goals in the Champions League. They trail only Victor Osimmen.

At the same time, Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku and Bernardo Silva each scored a goal for Manchester City in this season's European competitions.

The victory over Dortmund brings Manchester City one step closer to qualifying for the Champions League group stage. In the second round, they drew 2-2 with Monaco and now they are aiming for a third win in this competition.
