The difficulties of the new CBA champion Guangsha: Where does the AFC Champions League participate in the future?

9:52pm, 22 May 2025Football

After Guangsha defeated Beijing 125-118 away on May 20, Guangsha became the 8th team in CBA history to win the championship. Since they reached the top on the away game, Guangsha only accepted a brief award ceremony and did not celebrate too grandly. Guangsha fans could not share the joy of victory with the team on the away game.

So on May 21, Guangsha Club decided to hold a championship celebration at its home court and invited fans to the scene to celebrate the first cup with the team. However, there were not many fans who came to the home court to celebrate with Guangsha. I don’t know if it was because of the number of people or other issues, so some self-media also posted a message saying that they did not understand why Guangsha won the first championship in the team history, so few fans came. However, after Guangsha won the championship, it was indeed not very popular on the Internet.

However, after a series of championship celebrations, they will face new problems that need to be solved, that is, the AFC Champions League that will be about to begin. Last season, Liaoning participated in the AFC Champions League as the CBA champion, but the team sent by Liaoning at that time was composed of substitute players and foreign players who were temporarily signed for short-term contracts. This lineup and the results of the game have aroused dissatisfaction and criticism from some domestic self-media. Now it is Guangsha's turn to play the AFC Champions League this time.

Guangsha, as the CBA champion of the 2024-2025 season, also got the opportunity to participate in the AFC Champions League. It is understood that the AFC Champions League has been confirmed to start in Dubai on June 7, and the National Games will start on June 5. Sun Minghui, Hu Jinqiu, Zhao Yanhao and Zhao Jiaren in the Guangsha team will represent Sichuan to participate in the National Games. In this way, Guangsha's AFC Champions League journey will face the dilemma of no one available. Is it abstaining from the National Games to win glory for the CBA League? Or should I add young players to the bench?

In addition, except for the domestic players, Guangsha has no longer available, their four foreign players are unlikely to participate in the AFC Champions League. First, the foreign players are probably all over the place just after the league ends. Second, whether it is necessary to spend a lot of money to let the four foreign players participate, and third, the main players who just won the CBA championship all need to rest.

Their current situation is similar to that of Liaoning last year. Liaoning just won three consecutive championships last year. The team's main players and foreign players also need to rest and relax after a season. Moreover, the AFC Champions League itself has no popularity and value. Liaoning is all substitutes and young players participating, plus the two foreign players signed temporarily.

So now there are only two choices in front of Guangsha. The first is to imitate Liaoning's model to participate in the AFC Champions League. The second is to consider the image of the championship, and to choose three foreign players to play in the AFC Champions League with substitutes. How will Guangsha choose?
