Gambling case goes to trial! Billups denies the charges and is released on $5 million bail

2:29pm, 25 November 2025Football

On November 25, Trail Blazers coach and Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups appeared in New York federal court and formally pleaded not guilty to charges of participating in an illegal poker game controlled by the Mafia.

Billups was charged with money laundering conspiracy and wire fraud conspiracy, both of which carry a maximum prison term of 20 years. He is considered the most high-profile defendant in an illegal gambling case uncovered by federal authorities last month involving more than 30 suspects. Prosecutors allege that Billups, as a celebrity "face", was invited to participate in these secret poker games held in Manhattan, Las Vegas, Miami and the Hamptons to help attract high-net-worth players, making it easier for the Mafia to profit from manipulating the cards. Prosecutors said he received a cut after some of the rigged poker games, such as a $50,000 transfer he received after a game in October 2020.

Prosecutors pointed out that these illegal poker games were supported by Mafia families such as Gambino, Genovese, and Bonano, and used modified card shuffling machines, hidden cameras and other technologies to cheat. Organizers need to hand over profits to the mafia, while mafia members maintain governance through violence, extortion and other methods.

Billups wore a dark gray suit on the day he appeared in court and remained silent, only answering "yes" or "no" when asked by the judge. Later, he used his property in Colorado as collateral and was granted bail of $5 million. Under the agreement, Billups is required to surrender his passport but is allowed to travel between some states.

Billups played in the NBA for 17 years. He won the championship with the Pistons in 2004 and was elected the Finals MVP. His total career income exceeded US$100 million. After retiring, he transformed into a coach. The Trail Blazers have currently suspended him without pay, with assistant coach Splitter serving as the interim head coach.

The 31 defendants in the case will go to trial again in March next year. The judge expressed the hope that the trial will officially begin in September 2026.
