November 08 Morgan updated the full version of the first and second parts of Cristiano Ronaldo's interview, and also invited former Real Madrid chairman Ramon Calderon, who signed Cristiano Ronaldo, to discuss the topic of Melo's competition.
Morgan: Do you think signing Ronaldo for 80 million pounds in 2009 (now considered the most cost-effective deal of the century), how significant is it to Real Madrid, a great club?
Calderon: For us, this is an extremely important and meaningful thing, and it is also one of the best signings we have ever made. The price of 94 million euros did seem high at the time, but as you said, it looks too cheap now. During his nine years at Real Madrid, he won the Champions League and the Ballon d'Or, adding a rich touch to the club's history. So for us, this signing is huge. In my opinion, his legacy is not only the joy he brought to Real Madrid fans and fans of all the teams he played for, but also the fact that he proved to young players and everyone that talent and skills alone are not enough, but also need to be coupled with what he has insisted on throughout his life - discipline, perseverance, determination, sacrifice, and all the hard work he put in here, just to be the best. The fans love him.
Morgan: Ramon, you have said before that you really want to sign Messi. Before you connected, we were still debating the "Meiro War." So I want to ask you, like I asked my other guests: if you had to pick one person to score a goal to save your life, who would it be?
Calderon: It's hard to choose. They are all the greatest players in football history, each with their own characteristics. When you think of Messi, you think of creativity, inspiration, talent and improvisation; when you think of Ronaldo, you think of speed, explosive power, balanced shooting ability with both left and right feet, excellent headers, and his help to the team on the defensive end. They are different types of players and I would like to have both if I could.
Morgan: But you're avoiding my question, Ramon. If you had to choose one person to save your life by scoring goals, who would you rather entrust your life to?
Calderon: I have to choose Ronaldo. It's not just because he is part of Real Madrid's history and I'm proud to sign him. I didn't do anything special and I shouldn't take credit. I was just the president of Real Madrid and he wanted a change of scenery. When he came here in 2008, he told me that he was very grateful to Manchester United, Ferguson, the fans and the club management. They gave him everything he could have at the time, but he wanted to seek change. For him, joining Real Madrid is a different experience, where he has the opportunity to enhance his image and reputation and win individual and collective honours. So now for me, Cristiano Ronaldo is the best. But I'm not saying that Messi isn't one of the greatest players in history.
Morgan: But for you, Ronaldo is number one?
Calderon: Well, you can say that, but it’s hard to say who is definitely number one. I think they make each other successful. They play in the same league and on two opposing teams, which is perfect for both sides. They make each other better and we're really lucky to be able to witness their era at the same time.
Morgan: Yes, Ronaldo has actually told me several times that he feels that the competition with Messi has brought out the best in both of them and raised each other to a higher level. There is no doubt about this. And I think the two of them actually respect each other. Ramon, I'm just like you. If I had to choose one person to score a goal to save my life on a cold and wet Wednesday in winter, I would choose Cristiano Ronaldo.
