The Brazilian Fruminense Club Division welcomed Fabio's 1391st official game in his career, surpassing the previous record held by England's legendary goalkeeper Peter Hilton and becoming the player with the most appearances in men's football history.
The 44-year-old veteran tied Hilton's appearances as early as August 17. In the second leg of the South American Cup round of 16 held on August 20, Fabio represented Frumenense to face Colombian team Cali America at home, and started and completed a clean sheet, helping the team win 2-0. This victory not only allowed the team to advance, but also allowed Fabio to officially enjoy the honor of "King of Appearances" in the world football with 1,391 appearances.
Fruminense Club and Brazilian mainstream media generally recognize that Fabio has officially topped the list of football appearances, although FIFA and South American Football Federation have not officially certified this record.
"Sometimes we don't realize what it means to break a record that has been maintained for many years." After the game, Fabio said emotionally. He spent his entire career in Brazil and the club also held a brief memorial ceremony for him, awarding special medals to honor the milestone.
The fans at the scene shouted in unison, "Fabio is the best goalkeeper in Brazil" and paid high respect to the meritorious veteran. Frumenense head coach Renato Gaucho commented: "No one can keep his career so long as he does. Behind this is a high level of professionalism and self-discipline. I believe he will continue to play, and this record may be difficult to break in the future."
Fabio started his career in 1997. Coincidentally, that year was the year when Hilton retired. He has played for Uniangon Delante (30 games), Vascoda Gama (150 games) and Cruzero (976 games), among which his years in Cruzero were the most brilliant. Since joining Fruminense in 2022, he has played 235 games for the team.
In 2023, Fabio won the South American Liberators Cup with Fruminense. This summer, he competed with the team to compete in the Club World Cup held in the United States and successfully entered the semi-finals, adding another highlight to his career.
It is worth mentioning that Hilton himself counted 1,387 career appearances, while Guinness World Records officially recognized 1,390 times. Now, Fabio has made his way to surpass with 1,391 official appearances, officially crowned the new "appearance king", and wrote his own legendary chapter.
