Within 48 hours of the free agent market opening, another signing has been settled! On July 3, according to well-known journalist Shams Charania, experienced defender Spencer Dinwiddie has reached an agreement with the Charlotte Hornets, and the two sides will sign a one-year contract.
Dinwiddie showed great fighting skills during her role in the Dallas Mavericks last season. When the team suffered a surge of injuries, he was appointed as the starting point guard in 30 games, averaging 14.3 points and 6.2 assists per game, effectively connecting the team's offense. He played 79 games throughout the season, and steadily outputted 11 points, 4.4 assists and 2.6 rebounds in 27 minutes of playing time. His joining will provide much-needed scoring firepower, organizational skills and locker room leadership to the Hornets’ young backcourt core Lamelo Ball.
Dinwiddie, who is about to enter his 12th season of his career, can be called a "wandering expert" in the league. His career has been transferred to the Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks (two times). He played 621 regular season games in his career (345 of which started), and averaged 13.0 points and 5.1 assists per game. In Dinwiddie's resume, the Mavericks' period is particularly critical: the 2022 trading deadline was part of the Porzingis trade and became an important rotation for the team to enter the Western Conference Finals, making great contributions as the sixth man. But just a year later, he was sent back to the Nets as a key bargaining chip in exchange for Kyrie Irving.
Charlotte Hornets will become the seventh stop of Dinwiddie's NBA career. This one-year contract is full of pragmatic considerations for both parties - the Hornets introduce experienced veterans at low cost to the team, while Dinwiddie has obtained a platform to prove himself again, while delivering valuable experience to new stars such as Ball. Whether this veteran who has been in multiple teams can find stable output space in Charlotte is worth looking forward to in the new season.
