From the UEFA Champions League overlord to the brink of relegation: Sevilla s salary dilemma and the crisis after Monkey s departure!

5:42am, 15 August 2025Football

Sevilla is in an extremely dangerous situation. As is the case in the past two seasons, Sevilla's salary expenditure is far beyond the ceiling and must be sold by players before new players can be introduced. The Ramon Sanchez Pisjuan Stadium was extremely calm this summer, and only Susso left the team with a free transfer, so the team only finalized three new players: Alfang Gonzalez and Gabriel Suaso joined as free agents, while Odisias Flachotimos arrived on loan.

La Liga's strict salary regulations are exactly why Sevilla may not be able to complete any player registration before the La Liga opening game, when Sevilla will be able to play with 12 first-team players available. Oryan Nilander will serve as the starting goalkeeper, while Adria Pedrosa and Marcao, who are listed as "fully transferable", will form the back line with Kik Salas, Jose Angel Carmona; the midfield will be led by Lucien Agume, Gibril Sou and Nemania Goodley; the front starters are Dodi Lukebagio, Pec Fernandez and Isac Romero. However, except for Juanlu Sanchez, Matthias Almeda is expected to be filled with reserve players in his first game in charge of Sevilla.

For this team that desperately needs transfer income, the current transfer income is as far away as "Waiting for Godot". To sell Juanlu, Sevilla completed his registration for him a few days ago, and Naples and Wolves reportedly are following the young player, but no deal has been reached yet. In addition, they have not been able to find new owners for players such as Adnan Januzai, Kelechi Ishinacho, Rafa Mir and Joan Jordan who have returned on loan.

Another player who could bring a considerable transfer fee is Loyke Bard, who played a central role in the 2022-23 Europa League victory. Despite attracting the interest of a number of Premier League teams like Bournemouth, Tottenham Hotspur, the Frenchman doesn’t seem to go to England but will instead move to Germany – Leverkusen is reportedly about to sign him for €25 million. But unless Sevilla can finalize these sale deals in the coming days, Almeida will only be able to use a temporary piece of squad in the opener.

Seville has not always been so difficult. Under Monchi's shrewd leadership - he is considered one of the top sports directors in football and is as famous as Walter Sabatini, Les Reed and Beppé Marotta - Sevilla has gradually become one of the top ranks and has become one of the most successful football clubs in Europe in the 21st century. The Andalusian regional team ended a 58-year championship drought by winning the 2005/06 Europa League (called UEFA Cup at the time), and won four Europa League titles and two Spanish Copa del Rey during Monci's tenure. In 2017, after leading the team to win 11 trophys during his 16-year term, he chose to leave and join Rome, but returned to Sevilla in 2019.

Under Monci's helm, Sevilla returned to the top, consolidated his position in the top four in La Liga and won the 2019/20 and 2022/23 Europa League championships. However, since Monkey left his hometown team in 2023 and became the president of Aston Villa football operations, Sevilla fans have ushered in a stormy day. The decline in performance on the court, the decrease in transfer income, and the failure to win the European game for two consecutive seasons have put Sevilla on the edge of the cliff.

This is also why Sevilla has not been able to register for Ruben Vargas, Akor Adams (the two players who joined in the winter transfer window were cancelled by La Liga on June 30), as well as new players such as Suyaso and Alphon, and may even consider not renewing any player before the match against Athletic Bilbao. This also explains why Sevilla will have another challenging season after relegating by just 1 point last season.
