In the U19 Men's Basketball World Cup, the Chinese U19 Men's Basketball Team encountered four consecutive losses and failed to reach the quarterfinals.
This youth team with high expectations first lost to Canada 72-80, then lost to Germany 66-90, and then to Slovenia 82-99; in the key game of 16-8, he lost to New Zealand 86-99, and had no chance to compete for the championship of this event.
In this game, the U19 men's basketball team showed obvious technical shortcomings.
In the first game, the Chinese team made as many as 21 mistakes in the whole game, and the inside rebound was suppressed by the opponent; in the second game, the German team was confronted by the German team. Although Zhang Boyuan, Zhu Zheng and other players had a period of time narrowed the gap to 3 points, the German team relied on their height advantage and mature tactical system, and finally won with a 24-point advantage.
16 entered 8th against New Zealand, the Chinese team tied the score for a while in the second half, but the big gap between rebounding 24 and 46 directly determines the direction of the game.
Chinese basketball celebrity Yang Yi, a famous Chinese basketball player, commented sharply on this matter in a live broadcast program: "This group of children has the best physical conditions in China, but how many shots can be stable when they go to the international arena?"
He pointed out that the overall basic skills of Chinese basketball youth in the past 30 years have been regressing, because the youth training system pursues short-term results too much. "The most direct way for the coach to have grades and the school to have honors is to train your body. No matter how good the child's skills are before the age of 15, he will not be able to beat his opponents without developing well, which makes the coach unwilling to spend time practicing basic skills."
Yang Yi emphasized that it was too early to set positions for tall players (such as forcing them to play inside) and they would have no chance of comprehensive development.
"You let a 2.10-meter-10-meter-old child only practice under the basket since childhood. How could he become like a 20-year-old man's basketball?"
According to the author, the defeat of the U19 men's basketball team is caused by the "unskilled technology" and "short-sighted system". It can be said to be a portrayal of the difficult situation in Chinese basketball youth training.
The player's basic skills are not solid, which is the direct reason.
In this game, the Chinese team made more mistakes per game on average. This "hand slip" situation reflects that the youth did not practice controlling and passing the ball systematically during training. Yang Yi said, "There are not many players who can shoot steadily," and even more importantly, when the opponent shrinks his defense, Chinese outside players often fall into singles and lack the ability to create opportunities by relying on pick-and-roll and pass-cut. To put it bluntly, it's like "treating basketball as a track and field competition". The skills are too poor and even the most basic tactics cannot be implemented well. The fundamental reason is the pursuit of utilitarianism in the youth training system.
In order to achieve results in the short term, grassroots coaches often choose "rush to achieve success" methods: let tall players not practice dribbling or shooting, but only focus on grabbing positions under the basket; let small players practice fast break counterattack repeatedly, and do not pay attention to the training of positional combat skills.
"Quick-in" training looks like the U12 and U15 stages to achieve results quickly, but it damages the long-term development of the players.
Just as Yang Yi said: "The coach only cares about the current champion. Whether the child can become a star in the future has nothing to do with him."
Only look at the ideas of immediate interests, which makes Chinese basketball fall into the vicious circle of "being better and better, but technology worse and worse."
What's even more ridiculous is that this abnormal training method has caused Chinese players to suffer in international competitions. European and American players can play complex tactical cooperation at the age of 15, and our players are still learning how to avoid making low-level mistakes; African teams rely on the combination of physical fitness and technology to compete for medals, and our inside players are not even proficient in the most basic back-to-body singles.
The example given by Yang Yi is very vivid: "American children are in good health and learn basketball at the age of 15. Even if our children are talented, they can only move under the basket at the age of 12. How can they become stars like Wenban Yama?"
To change this situation, not only the coaches need to change their minds, but also establish a scientific youth training evaluation system - for example, like the NYBO Youth League, put basic skills tests into the assessment standards. Basketball is a sport that requires technical accumulation. Without a solid foundation, no matter how strong the body is, it is useless.
I hope this crushing defeat can become a turning point, so that Chinese basketball can truly understand that what can win at the starting line is not height, but brain.
