James activates Redick s tactical board? Disassembles 6 Lakers offensive tactics

12:05pm, 22 November 2025Basketball

On November 19, James made his comeback and played against the Jazz for the first time. In this game, James started for 29 minutes and 37 seconds and made 4 of 7 shots, including 2 of 3 three-pointers. He scored 11 points, 3 rebounds and 12 assists. He made only 1 turnover and helped the Lakers easily defeat the Jazz. It can be said that James' comeback battle was perfect.

Now, I will break down the 6 sets of offensive tactics implemented by the Lakers in this game. Any additions and corrections are welcome.

1. UCLA variant tactic

Doncic holds the ball at the top of the arc, James stands on the wing, Ayton is under the basket, Vincent is in the strong-side corner, Hachimura pretends to cut down to the weak-side corner,

Hachimura cut down halfway and suddenly turned back to provide a side screen for James.

Doncic passed the ball over, and James got a good shot space and hit a three-pointer.

2、Fist Down+Misplacement

James passes the ball to Doncic on the wing at the top of the arc. At the same time, Reeves moves up to provide an off-ball screen for James.

Reeves provides an off-ball screen for James. The purpose of lowering the screen is to create an opportunity for James to misplace the big one and hit the small one.

James moves from the high position to the low position, facing the defense of small guard George, and easily uses the back shot to complete the layup.

3. Slip series of tactics (fake screen)

James holds the ball at the top of the arc, and Reeves uses Hayes's off-ball screen to move from the weak side to the strong side wing and pretend to catch the ball.

After Hayes completed the screen for Reeves, he immediately provided a fake side screen for James. After completing the action, he immediately moved forward.

After receiving James' ground pass, Hayes took off directly and completed a gliding dunk.

4、Spread Pick-and-Roll (five-out pick-and-roll)

Reeves holds the ball at the top of the arc and distributes the ball to James on the weak side. Hayes provides a side screen for James.

James continues to break through with the ball. Hayes moves down and attracts the weak-side corner. When the defender shrank to the basket, James passed the ball to the weak side corner.

Vincent made a Fake-shoot after receiving the ball, and then hit a three-pointer.

5, Pick-and-Rol l (Pick-and-roll cooperation)

James holds the ball on the wing, and Ayton lifts the pick-and-roll.

After James broke through, he did not immediately pass it back to Ayton, but continued deep. When he reached the basket, he attracted three defenders, and then distributed the ball to Ayton. The latter scores easily.

If the Jazz players do not help defend the weak-side corner in time, James can also distribute it to Vincent in the corner. The Jazz has someone to help defend, so passing the ball to Ayton is the optimal solution.

6. Back Door Cut (a weak-side back cut tactic that uses dislocation to attract defense)

When Vincent was holding the ball, James gave Vincent a ball-free screen, and then completed the defender exchange with Vincent.

James received the ball and immediately prepared for a post-up single. Because it was a misplacement, Nurkic at the free throw line had to come over to cover, but James was prevented from turning directly to the basket, so the bottom of the basket George also stared closely at James.

James directly passed the ball to Laravia who sneaked to the baseline. The latter quickly took off and completed a dunk after receiving the ball.

The reason why this tactic was successful is because James's ability to punish opponents for misplacement is still very powerful, so he attracted a lot of defensive attention when he turned his back, giving the weak side the opportunity to sneak attack.

In this game, James used his back to pretend to be singles and gave many assists to his teammates. Of course, James can receive assists because his teammates start running. Without air cuts, all tactics will come to a standstill. It can be seen that Redick usually studies the UCLA tactical system, and obviously requires the Lakers players to run more.

In this game, James also had a very gorgeous offense. After missing the layup, he got the offensive rebound himself. When he saw Vincent in the corner, he faked a pass and directly deceived two defensive players. Then he assisted Laravia to hit a three-pointer. This offense still showed that James has a good basketball intelligence.
