Ayton says he still hasn t worked out with James even though season starts in just 13 days

Considering Ayton has the skills to be an elite big man, his potential to play alongside Luka Doncic and LeBron James is one of the major storylines for the Lakers. Unfortunately, the latest updates the big man has provided have raised some concerns about the future.

"I didn't. I didn't," Ayton revealed when asked about his experience working out with Luka Doncic and LeBron James. "[It's] something I've been waiting for, it's just a matter of preparation. Redick and the coaching staff might have something that allows us to really build chemistry." Deandre Ayton's statement may raise some concerns about the Lakers' approach heading into the new season. The big man's addition is significant because it solves one of the team's most glaring roster issues heading into the playoffs. Not having him work out with the Slovenian is concerning given that he's an elite big man and even fits the template the organization has laid out for Doncic as an ideal pick-and-roll partner.

In addition to Doncic, the participation of Deandre Ayton and LeBron James also seems to be limited. After the center signed, he revealed that while Doncic was quick to welcome him to the team, James has yet to contact him. After two preseason games, the Lakers have yet to see James and Doncic on the court together. Doncic is resting after returning from EuroBasket and is expected to be part of the lineup for future games. However, James has been dealing with nerve irritation in his hip and will likely miss the entire preseason.

With less than 13 days left in the regular season, the Lakers' superstar duo must start building chemistry with him considering how important his role will be.

Can Deandre Ayton adapt to Doncic and James?

Deandre Ayton has positioned himself as a more traditional big man. In an era where centers can stretch the floor with their outside shooting skills, Ayton fits the template of being a reliable presence in the low post, getting rebounds and scoring on high-percentage shots. While being a capable rebounder, he also possesses a versatile set of moves in the low post and mid-range. The former No. 1 overall pick has established himself as an effective center given his experience in a traditional pick-and-roll system.

When considering these aspects, there is enough evidence to suggest that Ayton will be a solid fit next to Doncic and James. Integrating an elite big man like Ayton doesn't theoretically pose a challenge given how smart both players are. The only concern has to do with familiarity. The modern game requires players to make split-second decisions to keep the offense flowing. The difference between certainty and hesitation can only be overcome through individual talent or team chemistry.

Ayton’s early struggles have been witnessed in the preseason. While James and Doncic can undoubtedly get the best out of Deandre Ayton, familiarity with the big man will help the process begin sooner rather than later given the team's championship aspirations.
