It is reported that the Warriors and Spurs pursue Pelicans Trey Murphy III in potential trades

7:48am, 25 August 2025Basketball

According to US sports media F/W reporter Nico Martinez. Trey Murphy III is becoming the number one trading target, but it is not easy to pry him away. According to NBA insider Jack Fisher, both the Warriors and the Spurs expressed interest in acquiring the 25-year-old forward, and the Warriors even contacted the Pelicans this summer. However, the Pelicans have closed all inquiries so far, making it clear that they see Murphy as a key part of their future.

"The Warriors have a strong affinity for Murphy and have recently been in contact with New Orleans this summer," NBA insider Jack Fisher wrote. "However, sources say it's important that the Pelicans have rejected the appeal for the 25-year-old and take him very seriously. The two-way forward will sign a contract in the 2025-26 season -- exactly $25 million -- as desirable as his talent. Another team known to have a trade interest in Murphy is San Antonio." The Pelicans are in a tough situation now, with a mediocre lineup, but the stars are hard to stay on the court. Their miserable failure of their attempts to go deep into the playoffs since Zion Williamson arrived in 2019, which put them in the NBA purgatory state. During the February deadline, they started a series of lineup adjustments that they hope will improve their position in the West. First, they traded Ingram for Bruce Brown, Olynick, a 2026 first-round draft pick (top four protected) and a 2031 second-round draft pick.

They also packaged CJs, added Poole and Looney, and selected Quinn through the draft. Latest reports suggest that the team is trying to push two-way swingman Trey Murphy III, but the Pelicans have so far refused to enter unless they get an offer they can't refuse. Murphy, 25, spent a breakthrough season in New Orleans, averaging 21.2 points (career high), 5.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists, shooting 45.4% from the field. Although he missed the final weeks of the season with a rotator cuff and labrum injury, he is expected to recover fully and will return to training camp next month unless there are any setbacks.

As someone who has a natural feeling on both sides of the offense and defense, it makes sense for the Warriors to follow in his footsteps. He fits Cole's preferences and will be a reliable backup on the bench after losing Gary Payton II. And the Spurs. As a young team looking to improve their rankings in the West, they need all the help they can get, and Murphy will have a positive impact in many ways. While his exact role is unclear, he will provide them with a great boost on the wing and can set an example for his young teammates.

For now, Murphy's contract value for the 2025-26 season was $25 million, which would only increase his value as a trading asset. He is young, progressing, and has achieved high levels of production while being locked in a controlled salary. This is the exact image of a player the team wants to build rather than give up. Still, he is a name worthy of attention as he may draw attention before the trading annual trading deadline in February.
