Grizzlies Magic Bain exchanges Cole Anthony, Pope, and four rounds interchange. Magic is crazy?

8:18pm, 17 June 2025Basketball

Just just now, according to Shams Charania's report, the Grizzlies sent Bain to the Magic, getting Cole Anthony, Caldwell Pope, four first rounds and one first round swap. The draft assets sent by the Magic to the Grizzlies include:

The 16th pick first-round pick this year

A first-round pick in 2026 (having swap rights from Phoenix or Washington)

A first-round pick in 2028

A first-round pick in 2029

A first-round pick in 2030

This deal originated from the Magic's three-point shooting percentage in the league this season. Bain, as a top scorer (the career three-point shooting percentage exceeds 40%), will significantly increase the threat of the outside line, and form a space complementary with the forward combination of Bankairo and Wagner Jr. 12. Its off-ball ability and ball-holding offensive attributes can enrich the tactical system and accelerate the growth of young core lineups.

This cost includes giving out 4 completely unprotected first rounds (2025 lottery No. 16, Suns 2026, Magic 2028&2030 first round) and 2029 young micro-protection swap rights, overdrawing a large number of future assets. However, the Magic have sufficient draft pick reserves in recent years and are eager to break through the playoff bottleneck, which is in line with the strategy of competing for windows.

The Magic are letting go of Cole Anthony (averages 9.4 points last season) and Pope (a 26.1% three-point shooting percentage in the playoffs), solving the problem of crowded backcourt rotation and freeing up a clear tactical position for Bain.

And this wave of gamble from Magic also comes at a great price. If Bain cannot lead the team to break through, or if the star injury causes the record to decline, the first round before 2030 may become a high-value signing and feed back to the Grizzlies to rebuild.

The Grizzlies hold a large number of draft picks and may continue to package transactions (such as US media once speculated that they were chasing Antetokounmpo-level stars), and Pop/Anthony may also become a bargaining chip for the second trading.

‌Magics exchanges the future for the present, with accurate reinforcement but low fault tolerance; the Grizzlies win the initiative in reconstruction, that is, the dual benefits of combat power and draft picks can be called "heavy profits".

And the Knicks' failure in the big bet is a lesson for the past. He used multiple first rounds to exchange for Bridges, but in the second season, he faced the Pacers without any resistance. This is not the case in the previous season, and the coach was dismissed, which can be regarded as a failure in a big bet.

And Bain only averaged 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game, with a three-point shooting percentage of 39.2%, not even the All-Stars. With the Magic lineup, Bain, he probably can only break through the second round of the Eastern Conference. It’s really not worth it to pay so much for just one second round. No wonder the East has been rotten for so long, and the management is too bad in the West. The result is that the powerful stars are all in the West, while the powerful rookies are still in the West, which is a vicious cycle.

Subsequently, Mavericks media MFFL NATION forwarded the news and wrote:

Mavericks only won 1 first round in trading Luca, which proves how crazy this transaction is.
