Another signing in the free market! According to NBA famous reporter Shams, free agent Amir Coffey has reached a one-year contract with the Milwaukee Bucks to officially bid farewell to the Los Angeles Clippers who have played for six years.
The 27-year-old forward averaged 9.7 points and 2.2 rebounds per game last season, with a three-point shooting percentage of 40.9%, but he was forced to leave the team when the Clippers were tight in salary space - the Clippers were only $1.2 million away from the hard salary cap and were unable to renew their contract.
Koffey's joining marks the 10th operation of the Bucks during the offseason. The team's operation this summer can be called the "king of cost-effectiveness": signing franchise-protecting center Miles Turner for 108.9 million in 4 years, renewing the playoff killer Gary Trent Jr. (Average 18.8 points per game in the playoffs, 50% three-point shooting percentage), retaining locker room leader Portis for 44 million in 3 years... Each move is precisely strengthened, and almost avoids all premium contracts.
Although Coffey only received a training camp contract, his shooting ability perfectly matches the needs of the Bucks. Last season, his three-point shooting percentage ranked among the top 20% of the league in the receiving and his free throw shooting percentage was 89.1% a career high.
Although it is easy to lose position on the defensive end, this shortcoming is expected to be covered up under the defensive system built by Antetokounmpo and Turner. Clippers reporter Farbod Esnaashari commented: "Koffey saved the team at critical moments many times, and his value far exceeds the data." The Bucks' ambitions have been revealed - taking advantage of the window of the Celtics (Tatum's torn Achilles tendon) and the Pacers (Halliburton injured) retreating core injuries, and they strive to win the championship with all their might.
This new lineup has balanced offense and defense: Turner + Antetokounmpo form the no-fly zone, Trent + Coffey provides outside firepower, and Portis + Porter Jr. strengthens the substitute depth. If Coffey can prove himself in training camp, he might even squeeze into the rotation and become the "poor version of Middleton" around Antetokounmpo.
Now, the eastern pattern has been completely changed due to the crazy operation of the Bucks. While other teams were still worried about luxury tax, Bucks general manager Horst used "basic Taobao + precise contract renewal" to create the most cost-effective championship lineup.
The only question is: Can this seemingly perfect puzzle really withstand the impact of the Cavaliers and the Knicks? The answer may be revealed in the new season.
But it is undeniable that the Bucks' operations in the offseason have laid a solid foundation for them and it is worth looking forward to their performance in the new season.
